*Have you met anyone new who is important to you? Have you rekindled any old friendships that have made you stronger?
I've met alot of cool people over the last semester..mainly through UN100. Getting to know these people made the semester alot less stressful because if I had questions about something in a class there would at least be a couple people I knew. As far as old friendships go..I actually started hanging out with my old best friend again which I'm glad about. We used to hangout everyday..but then her and her boyfriend started drifting off into their own little world. However, that situation made me grow even closer to my other best friends that I have known since middle school.

*Have you experienced any major changes academically or personally?
Academically I've learned that I need to put alot more effort into my work. I watch myself get a bad grade on a test or quiz and I know I have to study more, but I still don't.

*What is your one BEST or FAVORITE memory of this semester?
I guess I would have to say the first day of classes because I had nooo idea what it was going to be like. It was the first day I realized I was really done with high school and that made me pretty happy.

*How will you live your life to the fullest?
I am going to live my life to the fullest by doing what I want to do with my life and not letting anyone get in the way of that. I want to experience all this life has to offer. I want to get a job that I am happy with, get married, and be able to travel all around the world and try new things.

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” –Stephen Covey
1) Reflect upon what you read in Chapter 11 of Thriving in College. What does this quote mean to you or how can you apply it to your life?

Chapter 11 talked about building good interpersonal relationships. Building these kinds of relationships in your life can really help someone socially. This quote means that before you can expected to be understood by someone you have to first try and understand them. It's not all about you. You have to try and get to know the other person on a personal level as well.

2) (Refer to page 380 of the text): Are you a “Crisis Tickler,” “Withholder,” “Irritator,” “Blamer,” or “Gunnysacker?” Explain.

If I have to pick one of those I'd have to say gunnysacker. I get annoyed by things just like everyone else, but I usually just blow it off, forget about it, ignore it or laugh about it. When I'm around certain people though I start to notice myself picking up all the things that I find annoying and it starts to add up then I get pissed off. Sometimes when I'm mad or annoyed at someone I also tend to kind of make sarcastic remarks or talk down to them. I hate when I catch myself doing that because I know how it makes me feel when someone does it to me.

"Who are the people in your life that you tend to turn to for social support when you are experiencing stress or need personal encouragement?"

When I need social support I go to my best friends. I can go to them with anything and I know they will be able to help me through it. They can relate to alot of the things I need help with and they can always cheer me up. I've been friends with alot of different people thoughout the years, but these are the people I have known the longest and they have always been there for me. I know that I can also go to my parents and I do sometimes, but I feel more comfortable going to my friends.

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it.

I'm most stressed out about money and grades. I feel like I'm spending too much money on things I don't need when I could be saving it for things like books. I also hate spending my money so once in a while I ask for money from my parents, but I always feel guilty about it because then I feel like I'm wasting their money on unnecessary things. With the end of the semester coming up I'm also worried about my grades. I keep wondering if I tried my hardest or if I could of done better. I feel like my body is kind of reacting to this. I'm going to try to limit my spending and make sure I study as much as I can until the end of the semester.

2) FFN: Chapter 8 / This is a creative writing exercise! Read the following scenario and finish it based on your knowledge after reading Chapter 8. You are "Raul" and have just immigrated to the American West illegally from Mexico. You brought your wife and two young children with you on a frightening and expensive 4-day journey in the back of a beat-up truck to arrive in Texas. You can't find work there and Border Patrol is cracking down, so you decide to migrate north a bit where you have relatives in Colorado. You are hired on the spot by ConAgra to work in one of their "beef processing" plants.

-Describe in sensory detail your place of employment. (What's it looks like, what is going on, how do people act, what do you wear, what is your job? etc..)
I work in a large plant that is filled with machinery, blood, and meat. It is freezing cold and smells horrible. I wear normal clothes usually with a an apron and boots because there is blood all over the floor. Some people are killing the animals, some are cutting the meat, and some are picking up scraps. Everybody is trying to do their job as fast as they can because they don't want to fall behind. I have to stand in crowded line where I can barely move and grab pieces of meat and slice it.

-How much $$$ do you earn?
I barely earn enough money to support my family.

-How do your days go? What are your work hours and what do you do after work?
I work about ten hours a day. I dread going to work because each time I go there is a possibility I could be seriously injured. After work I go home and I have to sharpen my knife and then I spend what time I can with my family.

-Where do you live, what do you live in, how is your quality of life?
I live in a mobile home in a not so good neighborhood. I have shelter, food, water and clothes. My quality of life is ok. I get by.

-How do you think you have changed acedemically since the beginning of this school year?
I think I've been doing better in my classes then I was doing in high school. I have learned valuable study tips and I think I've been pretty consistent since the beginning of the school year.

-Do you believe you are working to your full ablility in all of your classes?
Even though I'm pretty happy with my grades I know I could still do alot better. I'm not studying as much as I should and I'm not using all the resources that are offered on campus. I pay attention in all of my classes, but I usually have a hard time trying to pay attention in math. When I don't understand what the professor is talking about I just kind of zone out or go on my computer. I know I could do really well in that class because I've always done pretty well in math. I just need to focus.

1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.

Just a small town girl,
livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy,
born and raised in south detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhere
A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting,
up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people,
living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night
Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more timeSome will win,
some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
(chorus)
Dont stop believin
Hold on to the feelin
Streetlight people

Don't stop believin-- Journey.

2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.
1. Do you still plan on pursuing the major that you intended on?
2. Has college so far been overwelming for you at all?

3) What are you passionate about? Why?

I'm passionate about my freinds. I have known all of my close friends basically since middle school and alot of them went away for college so I try my hardest to keep in touch with them. They are people I can always count on and I'm with them the most.

4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.

I took out a student loan and my parents also took out a loan to help me. I also recieved the Michigan Merit scholarship which will help out a little bit. My parents told me they are willing to help out as much as they can which I am greatful for, but I would love to help them pay for some of it myself too. I'm guessing I'm going to owe somewhere around $30,000.

5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?

I'm still really interested in Radiology, but I'm thinking of also looking in to Surg. tech. I'm trying my hardest to make the cut, but I'm going to look into other majors that are offered in Clinical Lab Science for a backup plan. What worries me is the fact that they only take 10 students and grades aren't a major concern for acceptance. If I want to keep up I'm going to have to stop going out every night on the weekends so I dont loose sleep. I always say I'll try to do my homework during the day on weekends to get it done with, but I'm always so tired.

6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."

Well I would have to say thats quite disgusting. If it smells anything like some of the places in Wisconsin with all the farms I'd have to say I never want to go there.

-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? If so, how does it relate to FFN?
No, I have never read the book so I couldn't say how it relates to FFN.

-How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?

It is around 80%. I don't think they see it as a problem because it's a job you could probably train anyone to do and if you don' t need many qualifications then I'm sure lots of people are going to apply.

We discussed captive supplies of cattle versus regular farming. Reflect upon this quote from page 150:"To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."
I think it's terrible what they do to these animals. Animals are not meant to be kept in confined spaces. It's definetly not healthy for the animals and implanting steroids into them is even worse.

-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How?
I'm sure these animals emotions affect their meat just like our emotions can affect our bodies.
These animals aren't treated like they should be and they aren't eating what they probably should be so there bodies are going to respond different and when the animals aren't healthy their meat isn' t going to be healthy.

-How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef?
I think it's disgusting. I can't believe the food industry is aloud to do stuff like that and I'm suprised they still do stuff like that. Everytime I think I want McDonalds I think about that and it changes my mind...or I do eat there and then I end up feeling sick after anyways.

Reflect upon one tactic we discussed in class this week concerning Procrastination, Study Habits, Retainment, or Test-Taking/Anxiety. (Choose something that you will probably try and discuss why).

I have a terrible problem with procrastination. I did it all throughout highschool and I knew I was doing it, but I couldn't help it because it was the only way I could get things done. I thought I could break the habit, but I'm still doing it. I have an anatomy exam tomorrow and I waited till today to start studying..which will probably show on my grade. I really need to start making a schedule and write down everything I need to do during the day and I'll post it somewhere I will see it all the time. I'm also going to start making flashcards because the reason I wait till the last minute to study is because I won't remember anything if I start studying a week or so before. I guess my brain never really transfers information from my short term memory to my long term hah. I think I need to start going to bed earlier tooooo...because everytime I come home from school I end up falling asleep for about 4 hours and that ends up wasting time.
