1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.

Just a small town girl,
livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy,
born and raised in south detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhere
A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting,
up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people,
living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night
Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more timeSome will win,
some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
(chorus)
Dont stop believin
Hold on to the feelin
Streetlight people

Don't stop believin-- Journey.

2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.
1. Do you still plan on pursuing the major that you intended on?
2. Has college so far been overwelming for you at all?

3) What are you passionate about? Why?

I'm passionate about my freinds. I have known all of my close friends basically since middle school and alot of them went away for college so I try my hardest to keep in touch with them. They are people I can always count on and I'm with them the most.

4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.

I took out a student loan and my parents also took out a loan to help me. I also recieved the Michigan Merit scholarship which will help out a little bit. My parents told me they are willing to help out as much as they can which I am greatful for, but I would love to help them pay for some of it myself too. I'm guessing I'm going to owe somewhere around $30,000.

5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?

I'm still really interested in Radiology, but I'm thinking of also looking in to Surg. tech. I'm trying my hardest to make the cut, but I'm going to look into other majors that are offered in Clinical Lab Science for a backup plan. What worries me is the fact that they only take 10 students and grades aren't a major concern for acceptance. If I want to keep up I'm going to have to stop going out every night on the weekends so I dont loose sleep. I always say I'll try to do my homework during the day on weekends to get it done with, but I'm always so tired.

6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."

Well I would have to say thats quite disgusting. If it smells anything like some of the places in Wisconsin with all the farms I'd have to say I never want to go there.

-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? If so, how does it relate to FFN?
No, I have never read the book so I couldn't say how it relates to FFN.

-How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?

It is around 80%. I don't think they see it as a problem because it's a job you could probably train anyone to do and if you don' t need many qualifications then I'm sure lots of people are going to apply.

We discussed captive supplies of cattle versus regular farming. Reflect upon this quote from page 150:"To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."
I think it's terrible what they do to these animals. Animals are not meant to be kept in confined spaces. It's definetly not healthy for the animals and implanting steroids into them is even worse.

-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How?
I'm sure these animals emotions affect their meat just like our emotions can affect our bodies.
These animals aren't treated like they should be and they aren't eating what they probably should be so there bodies are going to respond different and when the animals aren't healthy their meat isn' t going to be healthy.

-How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef?
I think it's disgusting. I can't believe the food industry is aloud to do stuff like that and I'm suprised they still do stuff like that. Everytime I think I want McDonalds I think about that and it changes my mind...or I do eat there and then I end up feeling sick after anyways.

Reflect upon one tactic we discussed in class this week concerning Procrastination, Study Habits, Retainment, or Test-Taking/Anxiety. (Choose something that you will probably try and discuss why).

I have a terrible problem with procrastination. I did it all throughout highschool and I knew I was doing it, but I couldn't help it because it was the only way I could get things done. I thought I could break the habit, but I'm still doing it. I have an anatomy exam tomorrow and I waited till today to start studying..which will probably show on my grade. I really need to start making a schedule and write down everything I need to do during the day and I'll post it somewhere I will see it all the time. I'm also going to start making flashcards because the reason I wait till the last minute to study is because I won't remember anything if I start studying a week or so before. I guess my brain never really transfers information from my short term memory to my long term hah. I think I need to start going to bed earlier tooooo...because everytime I come home from school I end up falling asleep for about 4 hours and that ends up wasting time.

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? What do you need help in, specifically?

I feel like this course should focus on things like dealing with test anxiety, memorization and time management. Before a test I usually think I know everything and I can go over it in my head, but then when it comes to getting the test I get so anxious to start it right away I forget everything or I can't think of some of the things I just went over. I also have a hard time with retaining information. Once I take a test I forget all of the information I needed for that and move on to the next set of info. I also think its a good thing that we're reading FFN it's something interesting to add to all the other stuff were doing plus this gives me an excuse to read because I could never find the time to just sit down and read a book.
